According to the government sources there are 35 tribes in Kerala. But Dr. P.Somasekharan Nair states that there are 54 tribes in Kerala (Paniyar, NBS, Page 15) As per the 2001 census, total population of tribes in Kerala is 1.14%. Waynad, Idukki,Attappadi and Nilambur are the main centres where the tribes are living centralized.
